Designers, like architects, have to develop a sense of space. First, they learn how to draw with perspective, situating the beholder within a theatrical stage that organizes buildings, characters, objects, in proportion. They learn how to prototype, also staging tiny people, trees, so that people get a sense of sizes, environments, and again proportion.
The digital world is flat
Computer science and electrical engineering students do not get this training in space. So, we had to find a way to make them “feel space”.
Our solution: a scale 1 plan of Alexandra’s mobile home. While they suggested that we draw it on a wall, they finally realized how tiny the space was by walking within the representation.
